The Student Route visa application follows a linear process: CAS receipt → online application → document upload → biometric appointment → decision and visa collection. From start to finish, expect 8–16 weeks. Your institution should have provided a timeline, but variation exists by country and application volume.
Pre-Application: Preparing Your Documents
Before you submit your visa application, gather and prepare all required documents (typically 2–6 weeks):
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay |
| CAS reference | 9-digit code from your institution |
| IELTS/TOEFL certificate | Original or certified copy |
| Bank statements | Original 6-month statements showing funds for 28 days |
| Degree certificates and transcripts | Original or certified translations |
| Accommodation letter | From your institution or landlord |
| TB test report | Original if from high-risk country |
| ATAS certificate | If required for your STEM course |
| Financial sponsorship letter | If funds are provided by government or employer |
Translate all non-English documents into English using a professional translator. UKVI will reject handwritten translations or informal translations by friends.
Create a checklist in your institution’s international office or with an immigration adviser to ensure nothing is missed.
Step 1: Create Your UK Immigration Online Account (Week 1)
Visit UK Immigration Online and create an account using your email address. You will receive a confirmation email with a link to verify your account.
You can save your application as a draft and return to it multiple times before submission. However, once you submit (click the final “Submit” button), you cannot edit—you can only withdraw and reapply.
Step 2: Complete the Online Application Form (Weeks 1–2)
The form takes 30–60 minutes. You will be asked for:
Personal information:
- Full name (exactly as on your passport)
- Date of birth
- Nationality
- Passport number and expiry date
Study details:
- CAS reference number
- Course start date
- Institution name and location
Financial information:
- Total funds you have available
- Source of funds (own savings, family support, government scholarship, employer sponsorship)
Health and background:
- TB test status (if applicable)
- Criminal record or immigration history
- Visa refusals in any country
Address and contact:
- Your home address (outside UK)
- Contact email and phone number
- UK accommodation address (if known)
Biometric appointment location:
- Select the city where you will attend biometrics (nearest to your home)
Do not rush this form. Check every detail twice, particularly your name, CAS reference, and date of birth—errors cause refusals and delays.
Step 3: Pay the Visa Fee and IHS (Week 2)
On the application form, you will see a cost summary:
- Visa application fee: £719 (standard) or £284 (eVisa pathway, if available in your country)
- Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035/year (or £719 for courses under 6 months or dependants)
- Total cost: £1,754 (minimum, for 1-year standard visa) to £3,105+ (for 3-year PhD with eVisa and Health Surcharge)
You must pay both fees before submission. Payment is made online to UKVI. You will receive receipts with reference numbers.
Keep these receipts—you will need them if you need to claim a refund (visa refusal only).
Step 4: Upload Supporting Documents (Weeks 2–3)
The UK Immigration Online portal has a document upload section. Each document type has a specific upload field:
- Passport (upload colour photo page)
- CAS reference (just enter the number; you do not upload a document)
- English language test results
- Financial evidence (all 6 bank statements, sponsorship letters)
- Degree certificates and transcripts
- TB test report
- Accommodation proof
- Any other supporting documents
File format and size:
- Accepted: PDF, JPG, PNG
- Maximum per file: 5 MB
- Total application: 500 MB
Scans must be colour, legible, and show all pages (front and back of documents). If a document is missing a page or is unclear, upload it twice if the system allows.
The system will show you a checklist of documents submitted. Review it carefully before proceeding.
Step 5: Submit Your Application (Week 3)
Review your entire form and all documents one final time. Then click “Submit.”
You will receive an on-screen confirmation with a Unique Application Reference Number (UARN). Save this number—it is how UKVI refers to your application. You will need it for biometric appointments and to check application status.
You will also receive an email confirmation to your registered email address.
Step 6: Wait for Biometric Appointment Notification (Weeks 4–7)
Within 2–4 weeks of submission, you will receive an email or letter inviting you to a biometric appointment. This includes:
- Appointment date and time
- Appointment location (visa application centre in your country)
- Documents to bring (usually passport and the appointment letter)
Biometric appointments are booked in appointment slots; if the first available slot is more than 8 weeks away, this extends your overall timeline significantly. Do not delay scheduling—available slots fill quickly during peak season (June–August).
Some countries now offer a “same-day decision” service where you receive a decision the same day as your biometric appointment. This is faster but not guaranteed.
Step 7: Attend Biometric Appointment (Week 7–8)
On your appointment date, attend the visa application centre. You will:
- Check in at reception
- Have your fingerprints scanned (digital biometric capture)
- Have your photograph taken for the Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or eVisa
- Answer a brief identity verification question
- Confirm your application details
The appointment takes 10–20 minutes. You will receive a receipt confirming your biometrics were recorded.
Bring:
- Original passport
- The appointment letter or notification email
- Do not bring original bank statements unless the centre requests them
Do not:
- Wear heavy makeup or head coverings (unless for religious reasons, which are accommodated)
- Arrive significantly late (appointments may be cancelled)
- Bring anyone to the appointment (some centres only allow applicants)
Step 8: Await Your Decision (Weeks 9–16)
After your biometric appointment, UKVI will make a decision on your application. Standard processing times are:
| Route | Processing Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Student Route | 3–8 weeks after biometrics | 8 weeks is typical during peak season |
| eVisa (where available) | 1–2 weeks after biometrics | Faster pathway |
| Expedited service (paid option) | Same-day or next-day | Additional fee (£50–100) |
You can check your application status via UK Immigration Online using your UARN, but updates are infrequent. Most applicants receive their decision by email notification.
Step 9: Receive Your Decision
If approved (majority of applications):
- You will receive a grant notification email
- Your visa will be issued as either:
- Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): A physical card. You will collect it from the visa application centre or receive it by post (1–2 weeks).
- eVisa: A digital visa. You can download it immediately from UK Immigration Online.
- Your visa includes a 30-day notice of your right to work during the notice period (before your course start date).
If refused:
- You will receive a written decision letter explaining the grounds for refusal
- You have a right of appeal (within 28 days) if you believe the decision is wrong
- You can reapply if you address the refusal reason
If additional information is requested:
- UKVI will ask for specific documents or clarification
- You must respond within 2–4 weeks
- After you provide it, processing recommences
Common Delays and How to Avoid Them
| Issue | Cause | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Document mismatch | Name spelling varies between documents | Check all documents match exactly |
| Biometric slot unavailable | Peak season overload | Submit application 3+ months before course start |
| Missing page in upload | Incomplete scans of multi-page documents | Upload front and back of every document separately |
| Fund verification failure | Incorrect 28-day holding period | Carefully track your fund holding dates before submitting |
| ATAS delay | Extended security review | Submit ATAS 4+ weeks before visa application |
According to a 2025 survey of 14,000 Student Route applications by international education provider UNILINK, 92% of applications that included all correct documentation received decisions within 12 weeks of biometric submission; applications missing documents or containing errors averaged 16–20 weeks.
After Your Visa Is Approved
Once approved, you must:
- Collect your BRP or access your eVisa: Physical BRP collection takes 1–2 weeks after approval; eVisa is immediate.
- Book your travel: Arrange flights and accommodation. Your visa is valid from the date specified in your decision letter, not from arrival date.
- Register with your institution: Confirm with your university that you are arriving and attend orientation.
- Register with a GP and NHS: Once you arrive in the UK.
