The University of Sheffield(谢菲尔德大学)China entry requirements: minimum scores for Chinese bachelor's degrees

Published:

If you hold a Chinese bachelor's degree and want to apply to 谢菲尔德大学(The University of Sheffield)for the 2026 intake, the number that decides your case is the ranking band your undergraduate university sits in, combined with the grade tier you want to be considered for.

Across every band the university publishes, the lowest figure in the whole table is 0.65 — a weighted average (加权平均分) — and it appears for universities ranked 1–100 on the ranking system Sheffield uses, at the 2:2 tier. The next figures up are 0.7 and 0.75 in the same band, then 0.8 / 0.75 / 0.7 for the 101–300 band, and so on.

Read the table carefully, because the "typical" figure and the floor are not the same thing. The tier words — First Class, 2等1, 2等2 — are the university's own, and each row gives a different requirement for each of them.

The published bands

Sheffield's 2026 policy groups Chinese undergraduate institutions by rank and sets a different weighted average for each grade tier.

Undergraduate university rank (ranking used by Sheffield) First Class 2等1 2等2
1–100, and 211 / 985 / 双一流 0.75 0.7 0.65
101–300 0.8 0.75 0.7
301–500 0.85 0.8 0.75
501+, all教育部-affiliated institutions, and independent / private colleges 0.9 0.85 0.8

The ranking used is the 软科 (ARWU) ranking, and the university publishes the underlying longlist of recognised institutions in both English and Chinese, together with a separate list covering arts and other special-type institutions. That list includes arts colleges and institutions affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, PLA institutions, and institutions noted as DFC / 211 where that applies. The published longlist is extensive and the university states that the complete standard is whatever it publishes on its official site — check your own institution against the current version rather than assuming a band.

The pattern to note is straightforward: the lower your undergraduate university's rank band, the higher the weighted average Sheffield asks for at every tier. A 501+ institution faces 0.9 / 0.85 / 0.8.

Study modes that are blocked

The same policy document rules several routes out before scores come up.

So before you spend time on a score calculation, confirm your degree type is on the accepted list at all.

What the published materials do not state

Two things applicants usually look for are not specified in the policy summary above, and it would be wrong to invent them.

First, English-language requirements. The 2026 policy sheet sets score bands and mode restrictions but does not give an IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent figure for Chinese applicants, so there is no published number here to compare against. Any English score you see attributed to this policy would need checking against the university's own requirements page.

Second, per-course and per-faculty thresholds. The sheet sets one national table rather than listing higher bars by school or faculty, so any claim that a particular department demands more than this table needs its own published source. What can be said without that source is that a table uniform across faculties leaves room for individual courses to sit differently in practice, and that applications are assessed course by course rather than against the table alone.

How to self-check before you apply

  1. Note the exact English and Chinese name of your undergraduate university.
  2. Find it on Sheffield's published list and note which ranking band and ranking figure it carries.
  3. Read across that row to the grade tier you are aiming for.
  4. Confirm your degree is full-time and uniformly recruited, and that your route matches one of the accepted patterns above.
  5. Treat the resulting weighted average as the national floor for your band, not as a guarantee for any individual course.

These tables are published figures, not an offer. Nothing on the university's own materials converts a band score into an admission decision, and any page claiming to do so is not reflecting Sheffield's policy.
