For the 2026 intake, Newcastle University assesses Chinese bachelor's degrees through a 4-Tier system that converts your weighted average into a UK degree classification. The lowest bar is a 2:2-equivalent: 70% at Tier 1 and Tier 2 institutions, or 75% at Tier 3 and Tier 4 institutions. Most taught master's courses ask for the higher 2:1-equivalent instead.
How the 4-Tier conversion works
The university applies one score-exchange table to all programmes. Your institution's tier decides the percentage you need for each UK degree class.
| UK degree class | Tier 1 | Tier 2 | Tier 3 | Tier 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st Class | 80% | 80% | 85% | 85% |
| 2:1 | 75% | 75% | 80% | 80% |
| 2:2 | 70% | 70% | 75% | 75% |
The 4-Tier system covers all mainland China undergraduate institutions recognised by the Ministry of Education. It does not include specialist or vocational colleges (专科院校及职校).
Lowest and typical required averages
The lowest minimum in the table is 70% (2:2-equivalent) at Tier 1 and Tier 2. The typical minimum for most master's programmes is 75% at Tier 1/2 or 80% at Tier 3/4 (2:1-equivalent). A 1st-Class-equivalent offer requires 80% (Tier 1/2) or 85% (Tier 3/4).
Your actual requirement follows from the programme you pick. Find the UK class listed for your course, then read across to your tier.
