Lancaster University(兰卡斯特大学)China entry requirements: minimum scores for Chinese bachelor's degrees

Published:

Lancaster University's published 2026 requirements for applicants who hold a Chinese bachelor's degree are expressed as an arithmetic average over your four years, and the number you need depends on which of two things you pick: the degree classification your target programme asks for, and the tier band your own university sits in.

For the large majority of taught master's programmes requiring a UK 2:1 equivalent, the minimum is 0.7 for Band 1 institutions and 0.75 for Band 2. For programmes requiring a UK 2:2 equivalent, the minimum is 0.65 for Band 1 and 0.7 for Band 2. Those four figures are the whole of Lancaster University's2026 China policy table for mainland institutions.

So if you are checking "what is the lowest score I can get away with," the answer for a standard 2:1 programme is 0.7 — and only if your university is a Band 1 institution on Lancaster's recognised list.

The four thresholds, side by side

Degree classification required Band 1 institutions Band 2 institutions
02:01:00 (UK 2:1 equivalent) 0.7 0.75
02:02:00 (UK 2:2 equivalent) 0.65 0.7

Only the master's entry requirements are set out in these figures. The published policy is stated as applying across all colleges, so the same classification logic applies whichever faculty you apply to within this scheme.

What "Band 1" and "Band 2" actually mean to the admissions team

Lancaster does not publish the numerical rule that converts a Chinese institution into Band 1 or Band 2. What it does publish is the recognised list itself, with each institution's band and province. That list is the authority — not any ranking you might infer from a university's reputation.

The band list runs to several hundred mainland institutions and is presented alphabetically by institution with Chinese name, band, and province. The excerpt available to us covers entries from Anhui University through Army Medical University and is truncated; the full version is the one to work from.

This is where most self-check errors happen. Applicants often assume their university falls in the band implied by its position in a national ranking. That assumption is not what Lancaster assesses. Find your institution by name on the list and read the band in that row.

Chinese-foreign cooperative universities are assessed differently

Universities with Sino-foreign cooperative structures are handled on their own terms, not through the Band 1 / Band 2 table. The 2026 policy gives each of them a named qualification route.

For programmes requiring the2:1 equivalent:

Institution Qualification route Entry requirement
The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen Hong Kong Degree Honours Bachelor 2:1 or GPA 3.0/4.3
United International College by Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University Hong Kong Degree Honours Bachelor 2:1 or GPA 3.0/4.3
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) Hong Kong Degree Honours Bachelor 2:1 or GPA 3.0/4.3
City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) Hong Kong Degree Honours Bachelor 2:1 or GPA 3.0/4.3
Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology Israel Degree 0.8
Shenzhen MSU-BIT University Russia Degree GPA 4.0/5.0
The University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China UK Degree Honours Bachelor 2.1
Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University UK Degree Honours Bachelor 2.1
Duke Kunshan University USA Degree GPA 3.2/4.0
NYU Shanghai USA Degree GPA 3.2/4.0
Wenzhou Kean University USA Degree GPA 3.2/4.0

For the 2:2 equivalent, the same institutions appear with lower thresholds: the four Hong Kong Degree institutions move to Honours Bachelor 2:2 or GPA 2.5/4.3, Duke Kunshan, NYU Shanghai and Wenzhou Kean move to GPA 2.7/4.0, Guangdong Technion to 0.7, Shenzhen MSU-BIT to GPA 3.5/5.0, and the two UK Degree institutions to Honours Bachelor 2.2.

If your degree comes from one of these, look up your own row rather than applying the Band 1 / Band 2 numbers. Note that the master's requirements listed here are described as applying to the large majority of taught 2:1 programmes — your specific programme's country page may set additional or different conditions, and the 2026 policy also notes that where a programme is separately specified, that specification governs.

The part that catches out strong averages

The 2026 policy states two additional conditions that a headline average does not capture.

First, most taught master's programmes require the equivalent of a UK 2:1, and the required arithmetic average varies according to the institution you graduated from. In other words, there is no single universal number for "a good Chinese bachelor's."

Second, Lancaster reviews the consistency and stability of your four-year record. Applicants with a fair number of low course results, or who have resat or retaken modules, face increased difficulty in gaining admission. A0.7 average accumulated across four consistently solid years and a 0.7 average built on one strong year and several weak ones are not the same application.

What the official materials do not state

Several things you may be looking for are not in the 2026 China policy as published, and it is worth knowing that before you spend time hunting:

For those, the programme page on lancaster.ac.uk and direct contact with the admissions team are the right route.

How to self-check before you apply

Work through this in order.

  1. List the programmes you are considering and note the degree classification each one requires — 02:01:00 or 02:02:00.
  2. Find your university by name in Lancaster's recognised China institution list.
  3. Read the band in that row: Band 1 or Band 2.
  4. Calculate your own four-year arithmetic average in the same form the policy uses, then compare it with the threshold from the table above.
  5. Scan your transcript for resits, retakes, or clusters of weak module results, and account for those before you decide the application is safe.
  6. If your institution is a Sino-foreign cooperative university, skip steps 2 to 4 and use the named qualification route and GPA threshold in the second table.
  7. Check the specific programme page for its own English language requirement and study mode availability, since the China policy table does not cover either.
  8. If your average sits within a few hundredths of the threshold, contact admissions with your transcript before submitting, rather than after.

Where Lancaster sits

Lancaster University appears at 164 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Use that as one input among several when shortlisting; it does not affect any of the thresholds above.

The figures on this page come from Lancaster University's 2026 China entry requirements and its recognised institution list. Check them against the current version on the university's own site before you commit to an application, as the policy is stated on an intake-year basis and yours may fall in a different year.
