If you hold a Chinese bachelor's-level qualification and want to apply to the University of Kent, the headline number to check first is the 高考总分 line: 70%, with some courses accepting 60%. Anything below that is not a near-miss the admissions team will read sympathetically — the published threshold sits at or below your score, not above it. Here is what else the university lists, and how to work out which route you are actually on.
First, work out which entry route you are on
Kent's published requirements are organised by route, not by nationality. A Chinese 高考 score sits under the undergraduate entry table; a 专科/大专 or 职高 qualification sits under different rows; and a completed first year of a bachelor's degree in China sits under its own row. Reading the wrong row is the most common way to misjudge your own eligibility.
The rules below are the 2023 intake requirements as published by the university. If you are applying to a later intake, re-check the same page on kent.ac.uk before you rely on any figure here.
Chinese qualifications: the undergraduate routes
高考总分. The standard figure is 70%, and the university states that some courses accept 60%. The entry requirements also carry a specific warning: 高考 scores do not apply to all subjects. So a 60% offer from one department tells you nothing about your chances in another.
职高 / 技校 / 中专. Vocational and technical qualifications are listed at 75% or above. These diplomas go through individual case review rather than a straight automated comparison, which in practice means the 75% is a threshold for consideration, not a guarantee of entry.
Foundation and pathway. There is no master's foundation programme. Foundation options are open to those who have completed 高二 (70%) or 高三 (60%), with a degree foundation or equivalent at 60% where the pass mark is 40%.
Transfer with an HND. Only two programmes accept direct entry to the final year, and both are top-up degrees: BA Business (Top-up), which accepts HND applicants only, and BEng Electronic and Computer System (Top-up). An HND at "Merit" is required.
Entry into year two or year three
Entry to year two or year three is assessed case by case. The general expectation is that you have completed two years of study at bachelor's level and hold at least 70% if your university is a 211/985/双一流 institution, or at least 75% if it is not.
That two-tier split is worth pausing on. The published average requirement differs by which type of Chinese university you attended, so the same transcript reads differently depending on where you studied. The university does not publish a list of recognised institutions, so you cannot self-verify the tier — you have to assume the classification is applied as Kent applies it.
What sets a higher bar
Kent publishes one baseline table and then says the rest plainly: individual faculties may set higher requirements. This is stated in the postgraduate section, where the published degree-class requirements are the university-wide minimums, not a guarantee at every level.
Practically, that means the number above is the floor you clear, not the number you compete on. Popular subjects — business, Computer Science, International Law — fill faster and, in the case of postgraduate study, are flagged as accepting transfer applicants from other disciplines.
English language
Kent states that requirements are flexible and that it accepts a range of tests, including 托福家考, IELTS Indicator, Duolingo, PTE and language certificates. The university does not publish a single uniform score in the entry requirements themselves, which means the level differs by programme and by your route of entry. Confirm the required score for your specific course before booking any test.
How to self-check before you apply
Work through this in order:
- Identify which route your qualification falls under.
- Note the percentage that route requires.
- Compare your own average against it, not against the lowest figure you have seen anywhere on the site.
- Check whether your高考 route applies to your subject at all.
- Check whether the course publishes a higher requirement than the table.
- Confirm the English test and score accepted for that specific programme.
- Re-check the figures on kent.ac.uk for your actual intake year.
Two things the published material does not settle: there is no list of recognised Chinese institutions attached to the 211/985/双一流 distinction, and there is no single university-wide English score. If either point is decisive for you, get the answer directly from the university before you spend money on an application.
