If you hold a Chinese bachelor's degree, the 2023 entry requirements at the University of Huddersfield ask for a 75% average for applicants outside the 211/985 categories, or 70% for applicants inside them. Both routes lead to second-year entry on a 2+2 pattern, or to a final-year 3+1 year. The English requirement is the same across the table: IELTS 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5.
Read on for how each qualification level is treated, where the same numbers do and do not apply, and what to check yourself before you apply.
What the 2023 requirements say, by qualification
The published 2023 requirements group applicants by qualification background and list, for each, the stage they may enter at, the academic requirement, and the language requirement.
| Qualification background | Entry stage | Academic requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic senior high school | Undergraduate, first year | Pass all subjects in the national unified examination (会考) with an average of 75% or above, and hold the high school diploma |
| A-Level | Undergraduate, first year | BBB |
| Domestic foundation year (本科预科) | Undergraduate, first year | Average of 75% |
| UK Foundation Programme | Undergraduate, first year | 50% overall and 50% in English (UK Universities IFY); Kaplan IFY 50% overall and 60 in English with no score below 55; INTO 50% overall and 50% in English |
| Domestic college diploma (大专) | Undergraduate, final year | Average of 75% |
| Domestic bachelor's degree (国内本科) | Undergraduate, second year, 2+2 / final year, 3+1 | 75% average for non-211/985 applicants, or 70% for 211/985 applicants |
| UK bachelor's degree | Postgraduate | Second-class 2:2 honours degree or above |
| Domestic master's foundation (硕士预科) | Postgraduate | Average of 75% |
| UK master's foundation | Postgraduate | 50% overall and 50% in English (SG Pre-Master, INTO, Cambridge CEG, Navitas); Kaplan 50% overall |
| SQA HND | Undergraduate, final year | BCC or BC |
| BETC HND | Undergraduate, final year | Merit |
Two details are worth pulling out. First, the 70% figure is not a general discount — the requirements attach it specifically to applicants who fall under 211/985. Second, the domestic bachelor's row is the only one in the table with two different averages; every other academic figure is a single threshold.
Where the English requirement applies — and where it doesn't
IELTS 6.0 overall, with each component at 5.5 or above, is listed for every undergraduate route in the table: senior high school, A-Level, domestic foundation year, domestic diploma, domestic bachelor's degree, SQA HND and BETC HND.
The same pattern runs through the postgraduate preparatory routes — domestic master's foundation and UK master's foundation each carry the same IELTS condition.
For UK bachelor's degree holders applying to postgraduate study, the language requirement is listed as N/A.
Where the IELTS score falls short of the direct-entry requirement, the requirements say the offer can be combined with a language course of the corresponding number of weeks. The materials do not state the number of weeks for any specific route, so your offer letter is where that gets fixed.
What you can check yourself before you apply
- Pull your weighted average out of your transcript.
- Compare it against 75%, or 70% if you fall under 211/985.
- Confirm which entry point you are targeting: first year, second year under 2+2, or final year under 3+1.
- Take IELTS and check the overall score and each component separately against 6.0 and 5.5.
- Read your offer for the length of any attached language course.
What the published materials do not tell you
The 2023 requirements are organised by qualification background. They do not list per-course or per-faculty entry scores, so if you want to know whether a specific programme asks for more than the general figure, you need to check that programme's own page rather than the general table. The materials also do not state whether the 2+2 and 3+1 patterns apply to every subject area, and they do not give a word count for the language courses — both are programme- or offer-level questions.
Why the 70% and 75% split matters when you shortlist
Two applicants with the same average can sit on opposite sides of this threshold. A 72% average clears the requirement for a 211/985 applicant but not for a non-211/985 applicant. That makes the category split a more useful screening filter than the number alone when you are comparing universities, because it can exclude a university from your list before you spend time on the full application.
