Start on the official programme page
Finding the right page is most of the work.
- Open the specific award, not the subject landing page. A provider guide lists BA (Hons) Business Management, BA (Hons) Business Management with Foundation Year and BA (Hons) Business Management (Top-Up) as separate programmes.
- Read the eligibility notes attached to the listing. Glasgow's Business and Management entry states that some courses are primarily available to students studying engineering degrees, that some are suitable for exchange students visiting Glasgow who do not study Business and Management at their home institution, and that the courses cannot be taken by MA students.
- On joint or combined degrees, check both sides. Glasgow asks applicants to refer to the entry requirements for both subjects and the degree award.
- Note the funding blocks while you are on the page. Glasgow's listing covers University Degree Progression Scholarships for international students progressing directly from Glasgow International College to a full-time undergraduate degree in academic year 2027/28, World Changers Global Excellence Scholarships for new international and EU undergraduates for 2027 entry, around 50 undergraduate Talent Scholarships typically worth £1,500 p.a. for each year of the degree programme, and two enhanced Talent Scholarships of £8,000 per annum for students commencing in 2027/28.
Matching your qualifications to the course
Context helps you judge whether a course is realistically within reach. That page is several years old, so treat it as background rather than current guidance.
The same page describes the structural workaround for a near-miss: International Year One in Business is designed for international students, gives the knowledge and skills of a typical first year, and leads into the second year so the undergraduate degree is completed in three years. It can lead to Northumbria University's Newcastle Business School, which holds AACSB accreditation in business and accounting and was the first in Europe to gain the double accreditation. The page also cites Collegefactual (2021) for a projected 8% growth in international business careers between 2016 and 2026.
Degree type is the fastest filter before you read a single module. A UK provider guide describes a Bachelor of Business Administration as covering core disciplines such as accounting, finance, marketing and management, a Bachelor of Science in Business as emphasising quantitative skills with statistics, data analysis and operations research, specialised business degrees in areas such as entrepreneurship, marketing, finance or human resource management, an MSc in Management as advanced study in a management area, and Business Information Systems as combining business with data analysis, information management and technology in business operations.
Verifying English language requirements
English rules are the part most applicants get wrong, because the test name is not enough: the version, the validity window and the sitting rules all differ. Manchester and Imperial publish enough detail to show what to look for.
The University of Manchester:
- Applicants from outside the UK usually need to meet specific English language requirements, and academic Schools may require proficiency above B2 level because UK degree content can be linguistically demanding.
- Requirements vary by course and are published on individual course pages, with sub-skill scores sometimes applying.
- Acceptable tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, Pearson and Trinity ISE are valid for two years after the test date and must be valid on the start date of the course, defined as the first day of Welcome Week, unless the page states otherwise.
- IELTS Online is not accepted, even though it is aligned to IELTS Academic.
- A joint CAS, where a foundation year or pre-sessional English course forms part of the full bachelor's degree, requires a UKVI-approved test or SELT such as the IELTS UKVI version.
- IGCSE English as a First Language is accepted with grade requirements on each course page; for September 2027 entry, IGCSE English as a Second Language is accepted only from Cambridge AIE, Oxford AQA and Pearson Edexcel, not from the Learning Resource Network, and IGCSE English as an Additional Language is not accepted.
- Some qualifications from other countries are accepted depending on the university's assessment of academic suitability, and you can check yours by contacting the university.
Imperial College London:
- All home, EU and overseas applicants must demonstrate the required competency level for their chosen course, and there are two attainment levels, standard and higher.
- You do not need to meet the requirement before applying; if you apply without a test, achieving one becomes an offer condition.
- IELTS single score re-takes are not accepted and candidates must meet the requirement on a single test sitting.
- The Business School no longer offers its own pre-sessional courses and does not recognise other pre-sessional courses as a way of meeting the English requirement.
- Imperial will continue to accept the TOEFL iBT after 21 January 2026; tests taken from that date must meet the new score requirements in full, while earlier tests are accepted under the old requirement if taken within two years of the course start date.
- Student visa applicants must prove proficiency, including by completing one of the accepted tests.
Glasgow adds the visa-side clarification: the Home Office has confirmed that the University can use these tests to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level programmes, it can accept UKVI-approved SELT but does not require a specific UKVI SELT for degree level programmes, and it therefore still accepts any of the English tests listed for admission to the programme.
Finding module and course-structure detail
Module lists are where a business degree stops being a brand name and becomes a set of classes you will actually sit. The method is simple but slow: read the curriculum, not the course title.
- Analyse the course curriculum with attention to the specific modules and specialisations offered, and check they align with your interests before deciding.
- Decide what you are optimising for first. The same guidance suggests clarifying career aspirations, preferred learning style and long-term goals before choosing among business courses.
- Use the degree type as a signal. A broad BBA suits a general foundation; a BSc suits applicants who want statistics, data analysis and operations research; a specialised degree suits a defined field such as finance, marketing, entrepreneurship or human resource management; Business Information Systems suits applicants drawn to the intersection of business and technology.
- Treat eligibility notes as content information too, since they tell you which modules you can actually register for. Glasgow sends readers to course pages for details on who may take individual courses.
Where a programme page does not state credits, teaching hours or assessment weighting, treat that as a question for the admissions team rather than a gap to fill with assumptions.
Deadlines and key dates on UCAS
Deadlines are the check most likely to be missed, because they vary by course rather than by university.
- Some courses have different deadlines, and many are a long time in advance of the start of the course; find out which deadline applies to you and what you must do by it.
- UCAS publishes separate 2026 entry and 2027 entry application deadlines, and its search tool displays courses for the relevant entry year.
- Applications must be with UCAS by 18:00 UK time on the published deadline date to meet the final deadline for 2026 entry courses, and the same 18:00 UK time cut-off is stated for 2027 entry courses.
- For 2026 entry, students can start their applications once undergraduate applications open but cannot submit to UCAS until 2 September 2025. A completed application needs all sections complete, the reference added and the application fee paid.
- An 18:00 UK time deadline applies to conservatoire music applications, while dance, drama and musical theatre courses may differ; UCAS advises checking conservatoires' own websites. The same 18:00 UK time slot is given for applications to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and for most courses in medicine and dentistry.
- Missing the main deadline is not the end. You can still apply for many courses after it, and Clearing opens for eligible applicants with vacancies displayed in the UCAS search tool; applicants can release themselves into Clearing.
- International and EU applicants get more slack in practice: many universities and colleges continue to accept applications from international students later in the year, nearer the beginning of the course.
- If you apply through a school or college, follow that institution's internal deadline rather than the UCAS date alone.

- Manchester asks applicants to contact it to confirm whether an English language qualification from another country is accepted.
- Imperial directs questions about the Business School English requirement to the Business School directly.
- UCAS sends applicants to the provider's own website where a specialist deadline applies.
- Keep the entry year visible when you compare answers. Manchester's IGCSE board list is stated specifically for September 2027 entry, and Imperial sets its TOEFL rules around tests taken from 21 January 2026.
