Understanding GMAT Critical Reasoning Question Types
GMAT Critical Reasoning questions test your ability to analyze arguments logically. Among the most common types are weaken, strengthen, and assumption questions. Each requires identifying the argument’s conclusion, premises, and underlying assumptions, then evaluating how answer choices interact with the logical chain.
In weaken questions, you look for an answer that reduces the likelihood of the conclusion being true based on the premises. For strengthen questions, you seek an answer that makes the conclusion more likely. Assumption questions ask you to identify an unstated premise that must be true for the argument to hold.
The logical chain analysis method involves breaking down the argument into its core components: premises, conclusion, and any hidden assumptions. Then, you assess how each answer choice affects the reasoning gap between evidence and conclusion.
Applying Logical Chain Analysis: Weaken Example
Consider this official GMAT question: “A company plans to increase profits by reducing manufacturing costs. The plan involves switching to cheaper materials. Therefore, profits will increase.”

Logical chain: Using cheaper materials → lower manufacturing costs → higher profits. Hidden assumption: lower costs directly lead to higher profits, without negative side effects.
A correct weaken answer might be: “The cheaper materials are less durable, leading to more product returns and warranty claims.” This introduces a counter-effect that undermines the profit increase.
The analysis shows that the answer attacks the assumption that cost reduction alone guarantees profit increase, by introducing an offsetting factor.
Strengthen and Assumption Questions: Same Core Approach
For strengthen questions, you look for answers that support the logical connection. For example, if the argument is “Installing energy-efficient windows will reduce heating bills,” a strengthener might be “Studies show that homes with these windows have 20% lower energy costs.” The logical chain is supported by confirming the assumed causal link.
Assumption questions require identifying what must be true. In the window example, an assumption could be “The homeowner will not increase thermostat settings after installation.” Without this, the energy savings might not materialize. The answer fills a necessary gap in the reasoning.
